A note about Starship Troopers, the movie

Starship Troopers is a Science-Fiction film directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1997. It is set in far future at our planet and some foreign planets.

Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Dina Meyer star in this film as John Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Dizzy Flores. It is based on the famous Science-Fiction novel has same name to this written by Robert A. Heinlein.

It's about the war against aliens named "Arachnids". It's a bright future and all nations are unified as The Federation. Rico is a typical high-school student about graduation and loves Carmen. He join up the mobile infantry along Carmen who has joined up the fleet academy. Dizzy Flores is a classmate of them and join up the mobile infantry also because she loves Rico. Rico gets squad leader in the mobile infantry by his own and everything was fine, but Carmen decided to go career in the fleet academy and break up with Rico. Then a companion of Rico is killed in an accident occurred by Rico in an exercise. Rico is very discouraged and has decided to quit the federal service. At that time, Buenos Aires, the hometown of Rico and Dizzy, is destroyed by the asteroid sent by the aliens. Accordingly he reconsiders to quit the service and go undergo many battles against the aliens. Dizzy and Rico get together but she is killed during the actions. During the many tragedies like this, Rico and Carmen are promoted rapidly by their tactical achievements.

It ends with the brain bug, the captain of the aliens, captured by the army. Rico becomes a Lieutenant and Carmen becomes a Captain of a battleship. The Federal Service is still recruiting new good soldiers like Captain Carmen and Lieutenant Rico.

The scene of a funeral ceremony for dead Dizzy is the most memorable for this writer. Rico says "Someone asked me once if I knew the difference between a civilian and a citizen. I can reply now. A citizen has the courage to make the safety of the human race their personal responsibility. Dizzy was my friend. She was a soldier. More than that, she was a citizen of the Federation." during the ceremony.

This film shows us the fear of foreign beings from Americans and their awful militarism. Politicians of The Federation are always serious but look weird and ridiculous for us. It's definitely clear what the Dutch director wanna say but he made perfect movie with a heavy atmosphere in order to make nobody consider it as a comedy movie. The special effects and logics are nearly perfect and showing his own philosophies of directing films by violent and sexual way. You can see these philosophies in his another movies : Robocop, Total Recall and so on.

It will be very happy for us if we watch this movie in a theater again.
